Vermillion man arrested on sexual misconduct charges

NEWPORT — A 26-year-old Vermillion County man is behind bars after being charged with having sex with a minor.

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, in a news release, stated authorities arrested Joshua M. Crum, of Dana, this week on a charge of sexual misconduct with a minor, a class-B felony. He was in the Vermillion County. His bond is set at $50,000.

Police said the case emerged in early February after the Vermillion County Department of Child Services learned of a teen girl, under age 16, who is believed to be pregnant. The DCS brought in the sheriff’s department for assistance.

During an investigation, the girl reported an alleged sexual relationship with a family friend in her home that took place around the end of August or the beginning of September of last year.

DCS and the sheriff’s department notified the girl’s parents, and the child received medical treatment, during which the pregnancy was confirmed, according to the press release. A forensic interviewer also spoke with the girl at a later time, the sheriff’s department reported.

On Monday, Detective Mike Phelps of the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department interviewed Crum, after which Crum was arrested pending review of charges by the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office. On Wednesday, Crum was officially charged with sexual misconduct with a minor and his bond was set.

Assisting in the case, in addition to the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, the prosecutor’s office and the DCS, was Susie’s Place Child Advocacy Center in Avon.
