Evening crash in southern Vigo sends 2 to hospital

TERRE HAUTE — A crash on U.S. 41 South in southern Vigo County sent two people to a local hospital Tuesday evening.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash at U.S. 41 and Indiana 246 a little before 8 p.m.

Witnesses indicated a Jeep crashed into the rear of a four-door passenger car as both were headed south on U.S. 41 South. The Jeep, according to witnesses, rolled over two or three times before coming to rest on its wheels in a ditch alongside U.S. 41 a few yards north of the Indiana 246 intersection on the west side of the highway.

Two individuals inside the Jeep were transported by ambulance to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, said Deputy Rory Leech of the sheriff’s department. Both were conscious after the crash, he said.

Two men inside the car that was struck in the rear remained at the scene and said the Jeep struck them from behind as they were driving in the passing lane just north of Indiana 246. They stopped their vehicle, which was badly damaged in the rear, about 100 yards south of the 246 intersection.

In addition to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Thunderbird and Linton Township fire rescue responded to the crash. Traffic on southbound U.S. 41 slowed but was not stopped by the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
