Man leads authorities on chase, with gun at his head

TERRE HAUTE — A man with a gun often held to his head led multiple police agencies on a chase late Saturday night.

According to a news release, Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at about 10 p.m. Saturday to a subject whom, they feared,  might have been in possession of multiple firearms at Walmart south in Terre Haute.

After being located in a parking lot north of Ryan’s Restaurant along U.S. 41, authorities said the suspect, William Bailey, led the Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies, the Indiana State Police, Terre Haute Police Department and West Terre Haute Police Department on a pursuit north on Seventh Street, Margaret Drive and U.S. 41 and lost both driver’s side tires on his vehicle.

Bailey crashed into the rear of another vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Chestnut Street and immediately exited the vehicle while holding the firearm to his head, police said.

Bailey dropped the firearm after deputies were able to talk him into removing the firearm from his head, police said.

Throughout the chase, Bailey was seen holding a firearm to his head multiple times, police said.

Authorities said Bailey was transported to the Vigo County Jail and booked on charges including felony resisting law enforcement, misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, felony criminal recklessness, misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license, misdemeanor reckless driving, misdemeanor criminal trespassing and three counts of misdemeanor criminal mischief.
