UPDATE: Train strikes, kills pedestrian

Identity of man remains unknown

TERRE HAUTE — One person has died after being struck by a train along CSX railroad tracks near the intersection of College Avenue and 14th Street.

Terre Haute Police were at the scene Friday afternoon, and an officer confirmed that one person was dead. However, the identity of the person was unknown, as was the circumstance of how the person came to be on the railroad tracks.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos told the Tribune-Star that the victim was a man, and an autopsy will be conducted on Monday.

A CSX train engine was stopped about 100 yards south of the railroad crossing on College Avenue. The railroad cars blocked the crossing on Washington Avenue, but the tracks were clear for traffic at Hulman Street.

Wooded areas buffer the neighborhoods adjoining the railroad tracks.

Any information about the person’s identity can be reported to police by calling 812-238-1661.

CSX spokesman Gary Sease told the Tribune-Star that the train involved in the pedestrian incident serves area industries from Terre Haute.

The train had two locomotives and 37 rail cars loaded with a mix of empty cars and cars loaded with a variety of commodities and products.

CSX is cooperating with local police, Sease stated in an email.

Following an investigation, the tracks re-opened at 5:30 p.m.
