ISP officer found dead after collapse

Foul play not suspected

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State Police are mourning the loss of one of their own this weekend.

On Friday afternoon about 1 p.m., Terre Haute police and fire units along with the ISP were summoned to the South Center Street home of a soon-to-be-retired Indiana State Police officer, Michael J. Capicik.

A friend found Capicik, 52, unresponsive in his home and dialed 911. The call was believed to have been made not long after Capicik collapsed, according to an ISP news release issued Friday evening.

Capicik was an active member of the ISP holding the rank of Corporal. He was a graduate of the ISP 43rd Recruit School and appointed on Nov. 10, 1985. He was scheduled to retire next month after 28 years of service.

Capicik served in many capacities with the state police, including road trooper, underwater search and recovery diver, supervisor of the overnight shift, Harley-Davidson Motor Patrol unit and, most recently, in the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center in Indianapolis.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Foul play is not suspected.

The death is being investigated by ISP Detectives First Sgt. Jeff Hearon, Don Anglin and Michael Taylor. Assisting were ISP Crime Scene Investigator Sgt. Kris Fitzgerald, ISP Lt. Dan Jones, Sgt. Chris Effner and Troopers Brandon Mullen and Bill Bradbury, Terre Haute Police and Fire units and the Vigo County Coroner’s Office.
