Police: Alcohol was a factor in Friday night crash

Driver of SUV sent to Indy hospital

PIMENTO — The driver who was severely injured in a Friday night crash in southern Vigo County between a box truck and an SUV had a blood alcohol content of .209, police said, well over the state’s legal limit of .08.

The driver of the Toyota SUV, Samuel Smith, 36, of Terre Haute, sustained severe head trauma and lacerations and was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital before being transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash occurred around 9 p.m. in front of a gas station at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Pimento Circle. The SUV was pulling out from Pimento Circle onto U.S. 41 when it was struck in the driver’s side, police said. A box truck driven by Curtis Criss, 64, of Lewis was traveling north on U.S. 41 when the Toyota SUV pulled out in front of him and the box truck struck the SUV, police said.

Smith had to be extricated from the vehicle, officials at the scene said Friday.

Criss was uninjured and was not suspected of being under the influence, police said.
