TERRE HAUTE — A search for a missing juvenile involved at least four police agencies and ended with two men in custody – one in Clay County and the other in Ohio.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department, said in a news release on Thursday, said it learned of a runaway 16-year-old juvenile on Monday and launched an investigation. The investigation uncovered that the juvenile was staying in a Plainfield hotel and was to be picked up by a truck driver. However, a check of the hotel by the Plainfield Police Department showed the juvenile had already left.

Clay County detectives next established that the youth was traveling east on Interstate 70. At this point, the Indiana State Police were contacted to help track the youth, according to the news release.

Eventually, Clay County detectives learned the youth was in Ohio.

Clay County detectives next contacted Clark County, Ohio, police who later discovered the juvenile and a male subject, later identified as Toby Dale Thompson, 42,  of Avon, in a semi-trailer at an off ramp near South Vienna, Ohio, according to the news release.

Clay County detectives traveled to Ohio to question Thompson, whom they identify as a convicted sex offender, and to return the juvenile to local authorities, according to the release.

Thompson was taken into custody in Clark County, Ohio, on allegations of interference with custody.

Another man, Kenneth Martinez, 50, of Brazil, was being held Thursday in the Clay County Justice Center on allegations of false informing. Police say Martinez denied knowing the juvenile’s whereabouts on Monday when they first spoke with him. Further questioning on Tuesday led police to believe Martinez was assisting the juvenile in hiding and that Martinez had rented the Plainfield hotel room for the juvenile.

Detectives are continuing the investigation, and charges could be filed in other jurisdictions, according to the news release.
