Machete, lawn mower clash in property dispute, police say

TERRE HAUTE — An argument between neighbors left a woman badly injured Friday afternoon on Indiana 63 south of Terre Haute.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reports that a 59-year-old female was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with severe foot injuries caused by a riding lawn mower.

According to a sheriff’s department news release, the neighbors, who are also relatives, had been involved in a long-time property dispute.

According to witnesses, about 4:30 p.m. the woman became upset and drove her Jeep through the man’s yard, causing property damage. The man, age 91, riding a zero-turning radius lawn mower, confronted the woman in her driveway. A verbal argument then took place and escalated to the point that the woman got out of her Jeep and brandished a machete, the sheriff’s department reported.

The man quickly turned the mower and the mower deck ran over the woman’s lower leg causing severe injury to her foot, according to the release.

Neighbors called 911 and administered first aid until emergency responders arrived. Detectives interviewed the man and witnesses. However, the woman was unavailable due to her severe injuries, police said.

Once sheriff’s detectives compile their findings, the results will be turned over to the Vigo County prosecutor’s office to determine if charges will be filed, the sheriff’s department news release stated.

Honey Creek Fire Rescue, Trans Care and Lifeline assisted the sheriff’s department at the scene.
