DeVaney principal finishes marathon minutes before deadly blasts

TERRE HAUTE — Michelle Nutter, principal at DeVaney Elementary, had just crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon about 10 minutes before two explosions occurred, according to Superintendent Dan Tanoos, who received a text message from her about 30 minutes after the explosions.

At least two people died and dozens were injured, some of them critically.

When he first learned of the explosion, “Our immediate concerns went to Michelle,” Tanoos said from his office this afternoon. Fortunately, Nutter was OK. She was able to send texts to several people to let them know, but she could not get a call through. In Nutter’s text to Tanoos, she said that she had been waiting down the street … when the bombs when off.

“She could see the smoke,” Tanoos said. Nutter then went to her hotel about three blocks from the scene. She wrote in the text “it was very upsetting and scary,” Tanoos said.

Nutter is in Boston with her husband.

Reacting to the violence, Tanoos said, “It’s very sad. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the dead and we hope for a full recovery for those who are injured. We  hope to get Michelle and her husband home safely.”

He also said, “It’s obviously a life-changing experience for her, not only participating in the marathon but then having to go through such a tragedy,” he said.
