Couple hurt after collision with trooper in pursuit of speeder

TERRE HAUTE — An accident involving an Indiana State Police trooper and another motorist occurred Sunday afternoon at Indiana 46 near County Road 525 West, police said.

Indiana State Police said that the crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. resulting in non-life threatening injuries to a Missouri couple.

Preliminary investigation found that ISP Master Trooper Matthew K. Ames, 42, of Terre Haute was operating his ISP marked 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe with all emergency lighting activated, traveling eastbound on Indiana 46 near Count Road 525 West, authorities said.

Ames attempted to pass a van (on the left) driven by Bill Tripp, 57, of Ellington, Mo., police said.

According to Indiana State Police, Tripp abruptly slowed and made a left turn in front of Ames.

Ames attempted to avoid the impact by steering to the right and collided with the right rear of the van, police said.

Ames was passing the Tripp vehicle attempting to catch up to and stop a speeding motorist traveling in front of the Tripp vehicle, police said.

Tripp and his wife, Hazel Tripp, were transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment of possible non-life threatening injuries, police said.

No citations were issued and drugs/alcohol was not a factor in this crash, police said.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, authorities said.
