New central pool on School Board meeting agenda

Tanoos: Possible location down to a short list

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County School Board will receive an update on a proposed aquatic center when it meets at 6 p.m. Monday.

The new pool would replace aging pools at the district’s three major high schools.

The deadline to initiate a remonstrance process with the county Voter Registration Office was last Monday. “We are pleased to have heard that no one has remonstrated against the aquatic center project,” Superintendent Dan Tanoos said last week.

On Aug. 12, the School Board voted unanimously to move forward with the proposal. The project, because of its estimated $9.8 million price tag, was subject to a petition/remonstrance process.

Now that the deadline has passed, Tanoos said he planned to inform the School Board and ask permission to move forward with the next steps in the process. Those next steps would involve consulting with bond counsel and selecting a construction management firm and architect/engineer for the project.

Nothing has been finalized as far as a location for the pool, Tanoos said last week. “We do have a short list. I’ll share that with the board in the near future.”

He declined to name those sites on the short list.

“We are trying to find the most suitable site that is as centrally located as we can find, also keeping in mind the cost factor,” he has said. A pool committee has been involved in the site selection process, he said.

Mayor Duke Bennett has indicated there have been preliminary discussions about possibly locating a pool on city-owned property, such as at Voorhees Park.

On Friday, board president Paul Lockhart said that Tanoos will update the board and public on the project. Lockhart was not sure whether the board will need to vote on anything at Monday’s meeting.

Action on a pool site is not on the agenda.

Preliminary plans call for a swimming center that would be 30,000 square feet. It would house a 25-yard-by-50-meter pool to accommodate swimming and diving; a small therapeutic pool for physical therapy and rehabilitation; seating for 300 to 500 spectators; and space for lockers, offices, concession and storage areas.

The cost cannot exceed $9.8 million, and the project would be funded through a general obligation bond issue.

Also Monday, Carolyn Roberts will introduce representatives of Garmong Construction and Joink LLC, as well as VCSC student interns who worked with them this summer.

Under personnel, the board will be asked to approve Cassandra Cook as principal at Meadows Elementary, effective Tuesday. She has been serving as interim principal and also has served as dean at Honey Creek Middle School.

The board also will be asked to approve Karen McDonald as the new principal at Deming Elementary, effective Jan. 6. She has been the principal at Meadows.

Madonna Johnson is the interim principal at Deming. Former Deming principal Susan Mardis is now the principal at Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

The board meets at the administration building, 686 Wabash Ave.
