Driver leads to another Rave Alert

TERRE HAUTE — Another report of a college student being approached by an unknown motorist offering a ride has prompted an emergency message alert at Indiana State University.

A female student reported to University Police that at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, while walking off campus in the 900 block of Sixth Street, she was approached by an unknown individual driving a 1990s-model, gold-colored, four-door car.

ISU Police Chief William Mercier told the Tribune-Star that the student refused the ride, and the driver left the area. The driver is described as a white male in his 50s, heavy set with thinning brown hair combed over.

Mercier said the vehicle involved was similar in description to a vehicle in a previous incident reported a couple of weeks ago in the area of Imperial Lanes along Third Street, where two students were approached.

“We’ve had a number of these incidents recently, so we issued the RAVE Alert,” Mercier said of the RAVE Emergency Text Messaging System that sends messages to subscribers’ cell phones and email addresses in emergencies. “Due to the potential danger that’s involved, we hope everyone knows they shouldn’t accept rides from strangers.”

In the other occurrences, a student was attacked in the area of 61⁄2 and Elm streets in a possible robbery, and an attempted abduction occurred in the area of Eighth and Elm streets. In another suspicious incident, near Sixth and Tippecanoe streets, someone in a red van approached a female student and asked if she wanted a ride. The student said no, and nothing more happened.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to contact ISU police at 812-237-5555.

Any faculty member, staff member or ISU student can sign up for the RAVE service using his or her ISU network ID and password.
