Greene homicide trial to get jury from another county

BLOOMFIELD — A jury from another county will be seated for the trial of an Indiana man charged in the Greene County slaying of a 19-year-old whose body was dumped in a lake.

Randal Crosley’s public defender and a prosecutor agree his case can remain in Greene County in southwestern Indiana, but that a jury should be brought in from a different county, the Greene County Daily World reported.

Crosley, 26, and Jordan Buskirk, 25, both of Jasonville, face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit rape and criminal confinement in the death of 19-year-old Katelyn Wolfe. Crosley also faces two counts of dealing a controlled substance. Both men are being held without bond in the Greene County Jail.

Public Defender Alan Baughman had filed a motion seeking a change of venue, but Greene Superior Court Judge Dena Martin denied the motion during a hearing Friday.

The motion cited public hostility against Crosley and public outrage over the crime among several reasons the defense believed Crosley could not receive a fair trial in Greene County. A trial date has not yet been set.

Baughman and County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw told the judge during the hearing they had agreed on a jury being brought in to hear the case in Greene County. Accordingly, Martin issued an order that the jury would be drawn from residents outside of Greene County.

Wolfe was reported missing by her father on June 6. She had been last seen walking a day earlier in Linton. Her body was found June 10 in a rural lake with a 20-pound weight tied to it.

An autopsy showed she died from asphyxia due to smothering, according to probable cause affidavits.

Buskirk has told investigators he and Crosley had discussed raping and killing a stranger, saying it “was just something that popped into their heads,” according to the affidavits.

The affidavits say he told investigators that he and Crosley killed Wolfe on June 6 along a Greene County road, then placed her body in the trunk of Buskirk’s car and drove around getting high before arriving at the lake.

No trial date for Buskirk has been scheduled. Pre-trial conferences for both men are set for early August.
