No suspect found after Maple Avenue standoff

TERRE HAUTE — A man police identified as Jeremy Ross of Terre Haute remained at large late Wednesday night after reports of gunfire brought dozens of police to a Maple Avenue home for a multi-hour siege of an apartment house.

A little before midnight, police began to break down the operation and soon told news reporters that, after a search of the apartment, the suspect was not inside.

It was not known where Ross had gone, police said. He is described as a light-skinned, mixed-race male between 30 and 35 years of age with a shaved head, multiple tattoos and about five-feet-10.

A Terre Haute Police officer who spoke with reporters said Ross was believed to be armed.

Early Wednesday evening, police received a report of shots fired around 14th Street and Maple Avenue. When police arrived, they went to an apartment building, where a woman police identified as Ross’ girlfriend told them shots had been fired and that Ross was believed to still be inside the apartment.

Believing Ross to be inside the apartment, police surrounded the gray, two-story building and evacuated some residents from nearby homes.

A woman who works at a neighboring beauty salon said she and several others inside the salon, which is next door to the apartment, were told by police to lie on the floor of the salon for several minutes before being moved outside. The woman said she heard three shots fired.

Hundreds of residents of the 12 Points-area neighborhood milled around 14th and Maple just outside the police barricade zone all evening on the hot evening with temperatures in the 80s.

Police attempted throughout the evening to communicate with Ross using text messaging, family members and a loud speaker. An armored car was also at the scene.

Law enforcement officers from the Terre Haute Police Department, the West Terre Haute Police the Indiana State University police and possibly others had the residence surrounded for several hours beginning sometime in the late afternoon or early evening.
