Park Board hears update from Vigo Y

Organization asks for long-term lease

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County YMCA is “strong,” a top official reported to the Terre Haute Park Board on Wednesday.

As required by the lease agreement between the board and the Vigo County YMCA — which is leasing the building at 951 Dresser Drive in Fairbanks Park — Deborah Ringo, CEO of Vigo and Clay County’s YMCA facilities, updated the board on the Y’s current operations and asked the board to consider a long-term lease. The current, three-year lease, started in February 2012.

“We completed our first year and a half of operation well ahead of our initial goals for this location,” Ringo said.

One of the goals, which was met in six months, was to reach the same membership numbers as the YMCA of Clay County, at about 3,500. Vigo memberships actually exceeded that by 70 percent, Ringo said, at about 5,000 members.

“We are investing in your building with help from the community,” Ringo told the board members.

Upgrades have been made to the pool mechanicals including exhaust fan and a chlorine pump the last couple of months. The pool filtration system was replaced on Tuesday.

Last week, a 26-camera security system that includes 30 days of recorded footage was installed in the fitness facility, Ringo said, and it was made possible by donations from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the Clara Fairbanks Foundation, at $10,000 each. The next step is to upgrade the basketball goals in the main gym, she said.

The board also approved the new specifications for the resurfacing of a portion of the Oakley Playground in Deming Park. It will soon be accepting bids for the project. The resurfacing is planned for the smaller Deming playground used by younger children.
