Riley project gets go-ahead

Intersection to be moved, traffic signal added

RILEY — The main intersection in the town of Riley will be shifted as part of an Indiana Department of Transportation project to install a traffic signal at the junction of Indiana 46 and Indiana 159, about 3.4 miles south of Interstate 70.

The project had been delayed while INDOT redesigned the intersection after a gasoline station company voiced concerned that traffic was pulling into the business immediately out of the intersection, an INDOT spokesman said.

Ironically, that gasoline station has been closed for several months.

“We are installing a traffic signal that has been warranted from having enough traffic there,” said INDOT spokesman Harry Maginity. “There was a hold up because of a redesign to push that intersection away from a service station on the southwest corner.”

“We are realigning that intersection so we don’t have people pulling into the filling station right out of the intersection,” he said.

The redesign will shift the intersection to the south, toward a Terre Haute Savings Bank building. INDOT purchased property from the bank for the intersection redesign, Maginity said. INDOT will place a block wall barrier in front of the bank as part of the intersection redesign, he added.

INDOT has awarded a $735,542 contract to Wabash Valley Asphalt for the traffic signal project.

The exact start of the project, Maginity said, “right now depends on utility relocations. With the weather, how it is has been, those relocations have not begun yet.”

Maginity said INDOT has scheduled the project for completion this year; however, if utility relocations are delayed, it could push the project into 2015.

The traffic signal project in Riley was among five projects that INDOT awarded contracts this week. The contracts total more than $3.7 million and were awarded based on bids submitted at its mid-January bid letting.

The other projects include:

• $1,227,447 for bridge construction on Indiana 32 in Fountain County, with one bridge located 5.5 miles east of Indiana 64 and two bridges 4.6 miles east of Indiana 63.

• $884,383 for reconstruction of Indiana Street from Washington to Seminary Street in Greencastle.

• $779,916 for Indiana 231 bridge construction at Little Pine Creek, 0.62 miles north of U.S. 52 in Tippecanoe County.

• $163,330 for raised pavement markings on state highways at various locations in the INDOT Crawfordsville District.
