TERRE HAUTE — The name of a woman who died Saturday in a fiery crash in Vermillion County has been released.

Vermillion County Sheriff Robert Spence said that the woman has been identified as Sheila Gay Mack Bennett, 44, of Clinton.

She was a passenger in the car that crashed off County Road 1300 South just west of County Road 1250 South at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

A 911 caller alerted police to the crash, stating that a person was trapped inside the burning car. The vehicle was fully engulfed when emergency crews arrived, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger in the car was transported to Union Hospital in Clinton for treatment of burn injuries. The driver of the auto fled the scene, but was later located, policed said.

The driver and another passenger have been questioned by police, Spence said, and the police investigation into the accident will likely be turned over today to the Vermillion County Prosecutor for review.

The names of the driver and passenger have not been released, Spence said, because of the ongoing investigation.
