Multiple shots in homicide

Dispute over money at victim’s residence, police say

TERRE HAUTE — A reported argument about money allegedly led to a shooting death on Saturday at the Greenwood Manor Apartments along 19th Street north of Margaret Avenue.

A probable cause affidavit filed in the arrest of 27-year-old Kevin A. Williams states that Williams allegedly went to the residence of shooting victim Daryl Graves, 48, to confront Graves about some money allegedly owed to Williams.

A witness to the shooting told Terre Haute police that Williams was sitting at Graves’ dining room table when Graves arrived at the residence, and the two men started arguing. The witness said that Williams shot Graves multiple times, including one time while Graves was lying on the floor, police said.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos said Monday that Graves’ death has been ruled a homicide. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, Amos said, noting that toxicology test results are pending.

Williams was later arrested at a southside motel near Margaret Avenue. He is being held in the Vigo County Jail on preliminary charges of murder and possession of a handgun without a permit.

The court record shows that Williams told police he went to Graves’ residence “to collect a safe that Daryl had stolen from him the day before.” Williams also told police he believed that Graves was digging into his own pocket for a gun when Williams pulled out his gun and shot Graves.

Two people who drove to the scene of the shooting with Williams have also been arrested.

Janet Akers, 42, told police she drove Williams to the apartment so that Williams could speak with someone. She told police she waited several minutes with passenger Willie Jenkins, 38, then she went inside the apartment to get Williams to return to her car. Akers said she heard gunshots, and Williams soon returned to the car. Akers told police she took Williams to an area motel and got him a room, then went to his house on North 13th Street to pick up his girlfriend. However, police stopped her car and took Akers and Williams to police headquarters for questioning about the shooting.

The court document states that because she drove Willams away from the scene, got the motel room and failed to call police after leaving Williams at the motel, she was arrested for assisting a criminal.

Jenkins was arrested along with Akers and Williams after he allegedly gave false information to police.

When questioned by police, Jenkins reportedly stated that he had not been with Williams and Akers when they went to Greenwood Manor. Jenkins told police he had been picked up by Akers on South Fourth Street just a short time before her car was stopped by police. However, Akers and Williams both stated that Jenkins was with them in the car before and after the shooting.

Jenkins was arrested on charges of obstruction of justice and false information.

Probable cause was found for the arrest of all three defendants during a weekend hearing. Their cases have been filed in Vigo Superior Court 6, with court hearings set for Wednesday afternoon.

All three were also being held in the Vigo County Jail with no bond set.
