Board mulls bid for Deming Center

Buyer of old hotel being considered

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Housing Authority Board of Directors has taken an important step toward finding a possible buyer for the Deming Center.

In a closed meeting – known as an executive session – Monday night, the board directed Jeff Stewart, executive director of the Housing Authority, to pursue negotiations for a purchase agreement with one of the bidders interested in buying the eight-story building.

Following the executive session, Stewart said he would be working toward a purchase agreement with one of the bidders. It’s possible an agreement could be ready for board approval by the end of February; however, that remained uncertain, he said.

The Housing Authority board typically meets on the last Monday of each month.

The offer currently under active consideration by the Housing Authority – if it results in a sale – would create a “positive impact” on the downtown, Stewart said. The Deming Center is the last of Terre Haute’s historic downtown hotels still standing.

A not-for-profit entity known as the Low Income Housing Development Corp., which is controlled by the Housing Authority board, owns Deming Center, which opened as the Hotel Deming in 1914.

The Deming Center, at Sixth and Cherry streets, includes about 109 apartments for low-income tenants. Most of the building’s tenants are expected to relocate to Warren Village, a new development for the Housing Authority on North 25th Street, also owned by the Low Income Housing Development Corp.

Deming Center tenants are expected to be moved out of their current building by 2015. Warren Village construction is currently ahead of schedule and is expected to be ready for tenants well before the end of the year.

The Terre Haute Housing Authority is governed by a seven-member board appointed by the mayor. It is funded and regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It provides low-income housing to about 2,000 families and individuals in Terre Haute.
