Village post office set to open today in Clay City

CLAY CITY — Frequently referred to as the “Mayberry of the Midwest,” Clay City in southwest Indiana is often seen as more in tune with a time when people waved to friends, knew neighbors on a first-name basis and took time to enjoy visitors.

Clay City was established over 140 years ago, and is still thriving with a newspaper, schools, a large medical center, sawmills, granaries and a nationally known pottery fair.

Today, another business will be added to the town’s roster when the 56th Village Post Office in the Greater Indiana District opens at Millers IGA, 6505 S. Indiana 59, according to a news release from the U.S. Postal Service.

Russ and Lori Miller are part of an independent grocery association and opened their supermarket 17 years ago.

“When we heard that the local Post Office was reducing its hours to six a day, we decided to go ahead and fill the gap by opening a Village Post Office in our store,” Lori Miller said. “It’s good for the town and, we hope, convenient for our customers.”

The store is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.

The new postal center will be opened by Jeff Leffler, the U.S. Postal Service’s manager of post office operations. Several USPS and local officials also will be present at the event.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. today, and an open house will follow until noon.

In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.

VPOs are operated by local businesses, under contract with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
