Arrest made in 1998 cold case

Clinton Bryan Mackey extradited back to Vigo County, will make court appearance today

TERRE HAUTE — A former West Terre Haute man who has been residing in Iowa has waived extradition and was on Thursday being held in the Vigo County Jail to face criminal charges in a 1998 homicide.

Clinton Bryan Mackey, 33, of Vinton, Iowa, appeared Thursday before a judge in Benton County, Iowa, where he waived extradition and agreed to return to Indiana in the custody of Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing. The sheriff carried with him an arrest warrant related to the Sept. 6, 1998, death of Erika Case, then 19.

Mackey arrived at the Vigo County Jail on Thursday evening, when he was booked on a charge of murder.

The criminal proceedings in Iowa and the transport of the defendant were kept under wraps by the sheriff’s department as a security precaution.

At the time of the homicide, Mackey was 18 years old. Case was found stabbed to death in a house where she had been house-sitting for a family friend. Mackey and another West Terre Haute teenager were known to be at the house with Case on the night she died.

Despite a lengthy investigation by local police, no arrests were made in the homicide. However, on Wednesday, the fugitive information and affidavit for extradition of Mackey to Indiana were filed with the Iowa court.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom confirmed that Ewing ordered the investigation into the Erika Case homicide be reopened about six months ago. Investigative assistance came from the television drama, “Cold Justice,” on the TNT network. The Feb. 14 episode of the television series is scheduled to feature the Case homicide.

Mackey is expected to appear at 9 a.m. today via video in Vigo Superior Court 1. A news conference has been planned for 10 a.m. at the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, where Ewing is expected to discuss the development of the case.
