Finance reports give insight into Valley campaigns

Cash on hand, consultant fees shown

TERRE HAUTE — Republican Terry Modesitt ended 2013 with more than $21,000 in his campaign committee for county prosecutor, while Democrat Greg Ewing ended the year with more than $2,800 cash on hand in his committee for county sheriff, but posted a committee debt of more than $15,800, according to annual campaign finance reports.

The annual reports of candidates and political action committees showing revenue and expenses for 2013 were due Wednesday under state election law.

Both Ewing and Modesitt are seeking re-election this year.

For Ewing, the debt to the committee is a campaign loan from himself and his parents. Greg and Kelly Ewing, his wife, loaned $9,302 to the political committee while Greg Ewing’s parents, Tom and Carole Ewing, loaned $10,000 to the committee. The loans can be repaid as contributions are made to the campaign this year.

Modesitt contributed $2,500 to his campaign on Dec. 18. The same amount, also on Dec. 18, was paid to the legal firm of Bopp, Coleson & Bostrom, according to his campaign finance report. Modesitt reports having $21,867 of cash on hand as of Dec. 31.

While not on the election ballot in 2014, the political campaign committee for Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett had the largest reported cash balance at $100,654 as of Dec. 31, according to the committee’s campaign finance report.

Bennett reported starting 2013 with $52,582 cash on hand and raised an additional $65,200 during 2013. Bennett reported expenditures of $17,128 last year, leaving the campaign committee with its cash balance at $100,654.

Three other campaign finance reports were filed for individuals who will seek election this year for judge of Vigo County Superior Court Division 2. Incumbent judge Phillip I. Adler is not seeking re-election. Adler’s campaign committee lists $1,740 of cash on hand at the end of 2013.

Lakshmi (Lucky) Reddy, a Democrat, reported raising $32,806 last year since May, ending the year with $6,486 cash on hand. Reddy contributed $4,500 to her own campaign in 2013, the reports states. Reddy listed several contributions from physicians, such as $1,000 from Dr. Paras (and Roopam) Harshawat, $1,001 from Dr. Suresh (and Girija) Kunapareddy and $1,000 from Dr. Padmavathi (and Arjun) Ponugoti. In addition, Affiliated Gastroenterology PC is reported as contributing $1,000.

Reddy reported more than $26,320 in expenditures last year. Some of the larger single expenditures include $2,382 to Polimark LLC in Indianapolis for campaign consulting; $4,616 to Logo Connection in Terre Haute for retail election products; and $2,040 to Trailblazer Communications in Terre Haute for marketing and communications.

The Indiana Secretary of State’s office as of Thursday does not yet list Reddy as a candidate. Candidates have until Feb. 7 to file for the May primary election.

Two other candidates have already filed. They include Democrat John A. Kelser II and Republican Christopher J. Dailey.

Kelser reported raising $19,450 since May last year, ending 2013 with $10,536. Kelser reports receiving $2,000 from Bradley Weaver Kesler, listed as a retired state employee, and $7,000 from Kim and Carrie Kesler, listed as “businessman.”

Kesler listed $8,913 in expenditures, which includes $3,036 for postal service and $1,523 for Your Logo Works of Aiken, a South Carolina print shop.

Dailey reports raising $6,165 since August, with $2,128 in expenditures, leaving the campaign at the end of 2013 with $4,036. Some contributions include $1,000 from Frederick Herrmann of Terre Haute and $1,000 from Kurt Pendergast of Terre Haute.

The campaign financial reports can be viewed online at www.vigocounty.in.gov. Reports currently can be found on the home page. Reports may also be found by going to the subhead “offices,” then go to “clerk,” then scroll down to “elections.”
