Let her reign begin

Vigo County Fair Queen crowned

TERRE HAUTE — Persistence paid off Monday night for Taylor Atterson, the 2014 Vigo County Fair Queen.

Atterson, 19, learned she would be representing Vigo County standing on the stage for the fourth time as a contestant in the annual event.

“A dream come true,” Atterson said of receiving the crown as a tear of joy slid down her cheek. “I’ve really been working toward this.”

Atterson was selected from 10 contestants. She will be joined at fair activities by 1st runner up Klair Wiram, 19, and Hayley Hayhurst, 18, 2nd runner up. This was also Wiram’s fourth year in the pageant and the first time for Hayhurst.

“I just plan on soaking up all that Vigo County has to offer me,” Atterson said shortly after receiving her crown. “I try to get involved in as much as I can, but I know there’s so much the community still has to offer me.”

A 10-year participant in 4-H, Atterson said she looks forward to looking at the exhibits at the fair. “It really just inspires me how crafty some of those kids are,” she said. “I always enjoy looking at new stuff.”

Wiram, an Ivy Tech student and Big Brother Big Sister volunteer, said she looks forward to the sheep show at the fair. Also a long-time 4-Her, Wiram was also named the pageant’s Miss Congeniality winner by her fellow contestants and also won the new award for the contestant who does the most to promote the fair through social media.

Hayhurst, 2nd runner up, a South Vigo graduate, said she is looking forward to relaxing and enjoying the fair and looks forward to representing 4-H. “I really enjoy showing my cows,” she said of her past experience at the fair.

The People’s Choice award went to Atterson. Donations for the People’s Choice award raised $1,371 for Pink of Terre Haute, a not-for-profit that assists area residents struggling with breast cancer.

Judges for the pageant, which took place at Tilson Auditorium at Indiana State University, were Kyla McKinney from Parke County, Rebecca Roach of Knox County and Jenny Behnke of Vigo County. Speaking before the pageant, the judges said the ideal fair queen would be friendly, outgoing, poised and a good speaker. They also stressed the importance of picking someone who would help promote her own county fair.

The 2013 queen, Sarah Hudson, was on hand to present the crown to her successor. Fighting back tears, Hudson thanked her mom for her support throughout the year and said her final duty as queen was “bitter sweet.” Her father presented her with roses and a hug on stage in her final moments as queen.

Also at the pageant, two contestants in the Voice of the Valley contest, Chloe Hayes and Michael Natt, both 14, gave solo singing performances.

The Fair Queen pageant committee for 2014 included Joy Jackson, director, Tammy Schaffer, Kristin Snow, Casey Hayne and Koby Bohnert. The event was hosted by Snow and Eric Michaels. Schaffer choreographed the opening number. The escort for the evening wear portion of the pageant was Justin Kump.
