Florida police nab 4th suspect in Terre Haute homicide

Victim run over by truck in alleged drug exchange

TERRE HAUTE — Florida police have made an arrest in connection with a May 28 Terre Haute homicide.

On Friday, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in Florida arrested Alex Hallett-Miles, 26, on a murder warrant out of Terre Haute.

The arrest is in connection with the May 28 death of Steven Vicars-Goings, whose body was found at Fifth and Swan streets in Terre Haute. According to court documents, the death of Vicars-Goings was the result of a conspiracy to commit robbery and involved illegal drugs.

Three other people have been arrested in connection with the case, and two have been charged with murder.

Shawn Keen, assistant police chief with the Terre Haute Police Department, stated, “We were notified of [Hallett-Miles] arrest today and have already made plans to return him to Terre Haute. We had received information early in the investigation that he had fled to Florida, and had even spoken with him by phone at one point. We are grateful to Florida’s Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and all the other law enforcement agencies who assisted us in trying to locate him.”

Terre Haute police will provide more information once Hallett-Miles has been returned, Keen stated.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s office, on Friday, deputies responded to 117 Lake Galilee Drive in Hawthorne after receiving an anonymous tip about a wanted subject who was hiding out there.

The investigation revealed that Hallett-Miles, who was wanted in connection with a murder in Terre Haute, was in the residence. Hallett-Miles was located and initially provided a false name to deputies. He eventually disclosed his real identity and was arrested on the warrant. He is currently held in the Putnam County Jail without bond, awaiting extradition to Indiana.

On May 28 at 11 p.m., Terre Haute Police were called to the intersection of Fifth and Swan streets  to investigate a body in the road. Vicars-Goings was pronounced dead at the scene, and a witness told police that he saw Vicars-Goings hanging from the side of a truck before falling into the road where he was run over by the truck.

Police have said the incident stems from a plan by the occupants of the truck to take illegal drugs from Vicars-Goings and drive away from him without paying for the drugs. However, Vicars-Goings grabbed onto the truck and would not let go for several blocks before he fell off.

An autopsy determined that Vicars-Goings died from multiple head and chest injuries.
