Downed power lines trap driver in car after crash

BRAZIL — Downed power lines left a woman trapped inside her car after a crash in Clay County Thursday evening.

The Indiana State Police report that Beth Beasley, 48, of Brazil, was driving north on County Road 100 East after 6 p.m. when her car was struck by another car, driven by 17-year-old Keirsten Mikesell of Brazil.

Beasley’s car then struck a utility pole and live power lines dropped onto her vehicle, trapping her inside, according to an ISP news release.

Rescue workers had to wait until Duke Energy workers shut off power to the lines before they could remove Beasley from her car.

Beasley was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital with what police said appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. An IU Health air ambulance was dispatched to the scene, but not used due to less serious injuries, police said.

Mikesell was not injured in the crash, which took place southeast of Brazil in rural Clay County.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Ian Portteus assisted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. Also responding to the crash were the Posey and Jackson Township Fire/Rescue departments, Duke Energy and Trans Care EMS.
