Union Hospital seeks nominations for awards

TERRE HAUTE — Patients, family and the public can nominate physicians, staff or volunteers for awards during the 22nd annual Union Hospital Foundation’s “Great Gala — Celebrating Great Leaders in Healthcare.”

The Weinbaum Award recognizes contributions to medicine from medical and dental staff, while the Baur Award recognizes an employee or volunteer for outstanding patient care.

Award winners this year will be recognized at a dinner Nov. 16 at Indiana State University.

“We want to hear stories from people. If a patient got spectacular care or has had great care over many years, certainly we want to hear from them,” said Joel Harbaugh, executive director of the Union Hospital Foundation.

Previously, nominations have come internally from the hospital group, said Harbaugh, who now hopes to obtain the Wabash Valley’s input on nominations.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate many, many amazing physicians and health care providers,” Harbaugh said.

The awards cover employees at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Union Hospital Clinton and the V&A Hospice. Nominations are due by Aug. 26.

For more information on nominations, contact Carolyne Holcomb, special events coordinator/development assistant, at 812-238-7534 or go to www.union for more information.

The Weinbaum Award is named in memory of Dr. Jack Weinbaum, a pathologist at Union Hospital for 33 years, serving from 1955 to 1988. “He was instrumental in innovating patient care and was very interested in education, playing a role in the development of the Terre Haute Center for Medical Education, which is now the IU School of Medicine in Terre Haute,” Harbaugh said.

“He was also very cognizance of our role in terms of community health and played a founding role in the first voluntary donor blood bank, which is now the Central Indiana Regional Blood Bank,” Harbaugh added.

Weinbaum also promoted a system of medical care for indigent people.

The Baur Award is named in memory of Sister Johanna Baur, who served as the first head nurse and first superintendent of Union Hospital from 1896 to 1902. “The hospital was fledgling, it was just three years old, but the hospital put out a call for help in 1896, Baur answered that and brought a staff of nurses from Cincinnati and established protocols for care and operational programs of the hospital,” Harbaugh said.

Baur also organized the Union Hospital School of Nursing in 1900 to ensure a quality supply of trained nurses for the hospital.
