CASA open house set for Friday

TERRE HAUTE — CASA is planning several upcoming events, starting with an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday in the CASA office in the Vigo County Annex at 141 Oak St.

The event is open to the public, and questions about the program are encouraged. Staff and CASA volunteers will be available to discuss advocating for children.

The next training for new CASA volunteers will begin in August. The training curriculum comprises 30 hours that cover topics such as the role of the CASA volunteer, laws related to neglect and abuse, report writing, and understanding diverse children and family situations. In addition, there will be an opportunity to observe in juvenile court.

Seven new CASA volunteers after a recent training class include Sharon Danek, Dee Drisko, Jill Gaskin, Linda Green, Charles Martinez, Brenda Shaw and Hannah White.

“Even with these volunteers taking one or two cases,” the group said in a press release, “CASA still has more than 40 children waiting for that special person who will be a voice for them.”

CASA is committed to providing a volunteer to every child in need. “Each child’s case is different,” CASA said in the press release, “but the impact that one volunteer can have on a child is overwhelming.”

Potential volunteers can contact the Vigo County CASA office at 812-231-5658, email Nikki.Fuhrmeister
