‘Suspicious’ fire in Farrington’s Grove remains under investigation

TERRE HAUTE — An investigation into the cause of Thursday’s “suspicious” fire at a two-story apartment home in Terre Haute continued Friday with a final ruling still pending, a fire official said.

The fire in the 700 block of South Center Street started a little before 2 p.m. No one was injured but the fire required more than an hour of work by crews from several fire stations to extinguish.

The blaze is deemed “suspicious” for a number of reasons, said Norm Loudermilk, arson investigator for the Terre Haute Fire Department. For one thing, the vacant home was not hooked up to gas or electricity at the time of the fire. Also, the home was the scene of an arson fire late last year and, also, witnesses observed someone illegally removing items from the home shortly before the most recent fire was reported, he said.

The previous fire at the home was not as destructive as Thursday’s fire, which destroyed much of the house.
