Extra state troopers to patrol on holiday

INDIANAPOLIS — More than 100 extra Indiana State Police troopers are scheduled to patrol the roads over the July 4th holiday weekend in an attempt to reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries, according to an ISP press release.

The effort is part of Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), a federally funded program. The enforcement begins today and lasts through Sunday.

Troopers will target drivers who are impaired, speeding, following too closely, making unsafe lane changes, driving aggressively and failing to buckle up or properly restrain their children.

ISP encourages motorists to observe the following safety tips:

• If you’re planning to travel a long distance, make sure you are well rested.

• Avoid tailgating.

• Obey all speed limits and always use your turn signals when turning and changing lanes.

• Avoid using cell phones while driving.

• Never drink and drive.

• Make sure everyone is buckled up.
