Vermillion man faces felony charges after high-speed chase

TERRE HAUTE — A Vermillion County man faces several felony charges after, police say, he drove his pickup truck toward Parke County sheriff deputies Monday, then fleeing resulting in a high-speed pursuit by police.

James Vandevender Jr., 42, Clinton, faces two charges of dealing in methamphetamine, class-B felonies; resisting law enforcement, a class-D felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a class-D felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a class-A misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a class-B misdemeanor.

He also faces a class-D felony charge of resisting law enforcement.

About 8:15 p.m. Monday, Parke County sheriff deputies observed a red Ford Ranger pickup driven by Vandevender allegedly trying to run another vehicle off the road at U.S.41 and Indiana 163.

Vandevender pulled into a lot near the intersection, and when Parke County deputies approached his vehicle, he drove his vehicle toward one of the deputies, the Parke County Sheriff’s Department reports.

Deputies then pursued Vandevender into Clinton, where Clinton City Police and Vermillion County sheriff deputies joined the pursuit. The suspect vehicle traveled at high speeds and drove through a parking lot in Clinton before going south on Main Street.

The pursuit ended several miles later near the intersection of County Road 240 East and Center Street in Clinton after the pickup struck a tree in a yard. The pickup has previously hit a parked vehicle in Clinton.

Vandevender was taken into custody. He suffered a leg injury at the end of the pursuit and was taken to Union Hospital of Clinton, later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

During the investigation of his vehicle, police investigators found two active “one-pot” methamphetamine labs in the truck and drug paraphernalia, the Parke County Sheriff’s Department reports.
