Pence explains vision for Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — A look at proposals that were highlighted by Republican Gov. Mike Pence in his State of the State speech Tuesday night:

n INCOME TAX CUT: Pence called on legislators to approve a key campaign platform of reducing the state’s individual income tax rate from 3.4 percent to 3.06 percent. Republican legislative leaders have been skeptical of the move, but Pence argued the state can afford the estimated $790 million-a-year cut and that it would spur economic growth.

n VOCATIONAL TRAINING: Pence proposed creating regional work councils around the state to tailor high school vocational programs to the jobs available at area companies.

n PUBLIC SCHOOLS: The governor backed continuing the accountability system that has led to contentious A-through-F grading scale for schools and the state takeover of a handful of troubled public schools.

n SCHOOL VOUCHERS: Pence called for expanding the school voucher program that allows qualifying families to receive state money to send a child to a private school by removing income limits for foster, adopted, special needs and military families.

n HEALTH CARE: The governor said he let the federal government “dictate” health care choices. Pence, as a member of Congress, opposed President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul and has ruled out a state-run health insurance exchange in Indiana.
