TERRE HAUTE — The “wet zone” was the place to be Monday as more than 300 children and adults were soaked with water to kick off the 2013 Summer Reading Program.

This is the first year that the Vigo County Public Library has staged an event outside to kick off the program, said Carolyn Clark, assistant librarian in youth services.

“We wanted to do something fun for the kids,” she said. “We couldn’t have done this without the help of The Friends of the Vigo County Public Library. They gave the funds to our department and we chose the entertainment.”

The entertainment youth services chose was Family Time Entertainment, led by Don Miller, the founder.

“I want to show children that learning can be fun,” he said after the water science presentation. “They learned about water and got wet, too.”

To keep the audience entertained, Miller often grabbed volunteers from the crowd to join in on his act. Among the volunteers selected was Terre Haute resident, John Black.

“He caught me nodding off, so he had me come up and dance with him,” he said.

The program is a good way to enjoy the library’s services and get the kids out of the house, he added. He has a daughter involved.

The program lets children set their own goals and read at their own pace, Clark said. Some children choose to read out of leisure and others want to challenge themselves.

“Once the child has met or exceeded their goal, they can receive a prize,” she added.

The last day to sign up for the summer program is July 13. The main library at Seventh and Poplar Streets and the West branch at 626 National Ave. both have events taking place over the summer. The library also has a teen program for sixth through 12th grades.

People interested in signing up can register online at www.vigo.lib.in.us or by calling youth services at 812-232-1115.
