Judge finds probable cause in child neglect arrest

TERRE HAUTE — Probable cause has been found for the arrest of a West Terre Haute woman who, police said, was found passed out at the wheel of her car while a child was in the rear seat.

Savannah Harden, 25, was reported by staff at the Vigo County Jail to be too intoxicated to appear in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Tuesday after being arrested Monday night on child neglect charges. However, Sgt. Doug Bensinger of the Terre Haute Police Department read a report stating that employees of a grocery story on National Drive notified police that Harden had been in the car in the parking lot for several hours.

A child found in the car was reported to be dirty and had not been bathed for several days. Harden told police that she was homeless and was upset because her boyfriend had been arrested for domestic battery, Bensinger said.

An empty bottle of prescription medication that had been filled only a few days prior was found in Harden’s possession, police said.

The child was taken into custody by the Department of Child Services.

Judge David Bolk set bail at $10,000 with no 10 percent allowed. Harden is to appear in court today.
