Ford claims narrow GOP primary race in District 38

TERRE HAUTE — Jon Ford on Tuesday emerged as the GOP nominee in a close primary election contest in Senate District 38. First-time Statehouse candidate Ford bested his opponent, John Carson, by fewer than 200 votes.

“I feel excited to be moving on to the general election. I’m glad that we were able to have a good, clean race,” focused on the issues, Ford told the Tribune-Star on the telephone just after the results came in.

He said his campaign had a strategy and “things went as planned.”

“We had a strategy, and we stuck to it and we won,” Ford said.

Ford also thanked his opponent, Carson, “for keeping it a good, clean race,” he said.

In a phone interview after the election, Carson said he had spoken to Ford by phone and congratulated him on the win. He said he wishes Ford well in the fall election.

Carson was grateful to everyone who helped with his campaign, one that he said afterward would be his final run for public office.

“We put a lot of work into it and I really appreciate everybody that helped us,” he said.

District 38 covers all of Vigo County and portions of Clay County. Ford’s cumulative total was 2,538, 1,453 in Vigo County 1,085 votes in Clay. Terre Haute native Carson garnered 1,433 votes in Vigo County and 939 votes in Clay, for a district total of 2,366.

With this primary win, Ford will face 12-year incumbent Sen. Tim Skinner, a Democrat, in the November general election. Skinner was unopposed in the primary for his party’s nomination. In addition to using more of a bipartisan approach during the general election, Ford said he intends to “run a solid campaign focused on issues important to Wabash Valley voters: jobs and infrastructure.”

Ford is currently the president of Terre Haute-based All State Manufacturing and a Honey Creek Township board member. He has previously served as chair of the Indiana Arts Commission.
