Rosedale man arrested after police pursuit, faces 11 charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Rosedale man arrested Tuesday night after a police pursuit in which he crashed a stolen vehicle faces 11 criminal charges in Vigo Superior Court 3.

The potential charges against Shane Michael Jenkins, 28, include escape and theft due to Jenkins allegedly slipping out of handcuffs while being treated at a local hospital emergency room, fleeing the hospital, and gaining entry into a parked vehicle and stealing items from that vehicle.

Detective Jason Fischer of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department stated in court Wednesday that Central Dispatch received a citizen report of a domestic disturbance inside a moving vehicle on U.S. 41 in southern Vigo County at about 6:37 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses reported that a woman jumped from a red Chevrolet pickup truck and that the man driving the truck was chasing the woman down the road with the truck.

Off-duty deputy Chris Jones was in the area and located the northbound truck near Allendale Hill. Jones pursued the vehicle as it sped away, and the suspect disregarded a red light signal at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Springhill, colliding with a westbound vehicle. That car collided with Deputy Jones’ patrol car, which then collided with another person’s vehicle.

The suspect truck then hit a lamp post on the former Sycamore Chevrolet parking lot, and Jenkins jumped out of the truck to flee on foot. After checking on the two drivers from the other vehicles, Jones apprehended Jenkins.

Police found that the pickup truck driven by Jenkins was stolen from Clinton, and the truck’s license plate was stolen from Terre Haute. Jenkins was also found to be wanted in Parke County for auto theft.

Jenkins was arrested for criminal recklessness with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement, auto theft, and three counts of possession of stolen property. He was taken to Union Hospital by Deputy Rory Leech for a chemical test for intoxication. While at the hospital, Jenkins reportedly slipped out of his handcuffs and bolted out a nearby exit door.

Leech searched the area, and was soon assisted by Jones and Chief Deputy Clark Cottom, who spotted Jenkins running east across the hospital parking lot. After a short chase, Jenkins was taken into custody by Jones and Cottom.

It was then learned that Jenkins had gained entry into a parked vehicle and took items from that vehicle.

Additional charges of escape, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, theft, driving while intoxicated, and resisting arrest were added.

The woman who jumped out of the truck was not located by police. Deputies learned her identity later, and reported that she received a ride from a friend.

Jenkins is to return to court Monday for filing of formal charges. His bail was set at $40,000 cash only.
