Tribune-Star welcomes new advertising director

TERRE HAUTE — A new advertising director has joined the Tribune-Star team.

Julie Killion began her new assignment Monday. A 14-year veteran of the newspaper industry, she has been with Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. — the parent company of the Tribune-Star — for the past eight years.

“I’m really excited to be in this area. This is a great town,” Killion said of Terre Haute, commending the community for the influence of five higher education institutions and a strong arts culture. “This is a pretty town, with a lot of local businesses, so there are a lot of places to explore.”

The move here is a Midwest homecoming of sorts for Killion, who grew up in the city of Marion in southern Illinois and graduated from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, about an hour west of Terre Haute.

Killion comes to Indiana from Texas, where she was publisher of the Weatherford Democrat. She will continue in her role as a vice president of sales and marketing for CNHI, working with the company’s newspapers and websites in Indiana.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Julie’s caliber to come to Terre Haute and lead our ad department,” said B.J. Riley, publisher of the Tribune-Star. “Julie’s vast experience in multimedia platforms will be a great benefit to the staff and to our customers.”

Killion is excited about the community spirit she has found in the Wabash Valley, and she hopes to become active in community organizations and charities.

“I’m really excited about the products that the Tribune-Star has that can help businesses reach the whole market,” she said. “The truth is that more people are reading newspapers now than in the past 50 years. It’s just in a different way.”

While those in broadcast media might claim that newspapers are a dying industry, Killion said that web and social media now allow newspapers to reach people on a different level, in addition to the traditional readers who look forward to their printed newspapers showing up at their doorsteps each day.

“On any given day, probably 75,000 people read the Tribune-Star, whether on paper or online,” she said. “So, we’re really excited about finding ways for businesses to reach that audience.”
