Rosedale man arrested after short chase by deputy

Several cars damaged in southside pursuit

TERRE HAUTE — A Rosedale man is facing felony allegations after being arrested following a vehicle pursuit on U.S. 41 on Tuesday evening in southern Terre Haute.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reported that Shane Michael Jenkins, 28, is facing allegations of resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.

Jenkins was arrested after leading Chris Jones, a Vigo deputy sheriff, on a chase through traffic on northbound U.S. 41 near Lowes to approximately the site of the former Sycamore Chevrolet sales lot.

Earlier, Jones, who was off-duty at the time, had heard radio traffic that a witness was following a red pickup truck whose driver and an unknown woman had been involved in a “rolling” domestic dispute near Boot City, said Clark Cottom, chief deputy with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman “jumped” from the pickup, according to witnesses, Cottom said.

Jones, meanwhile, waited along U.S. 41 and soon saw the red pickup pass. He followed and when he attempted to make a stop, the pickup sped off, traveling through the median to get around traffic, Cottom said. The pickup then allegedly ran a red light and struck another vehicle which then struck Jone’s pursuing sheriff’s department car, which in turn pushed the deputy’s vehicle into another car.

Meanwhile, the red pickup left the roadway and came to rest on the former Sycamore Chevrolet parking lot after striking a lamp post, Cottom said.

Jones, after making sure those involved in the crashes were not seriously hurt, ordered Jenkins out of the red pickup. Jenkins surrendered and was taken to the Vigo County Jail.

A drug and alcohol test on Jenkins was pending late Tuesday.

Jenkins is facing allegations of receiving stolen property, a class D-felony. The red pickup was stolen in Vermillion County, Cottom said. The pickup also had a stolen license plate.

The woman who reportedly jumped from the red pickup was not located by police and has not been officially identified, Cottom said.
