Orange Friday designated as hunger awareness event

TERRE HAUTE — Today is a special day to make a difference for hungry people in the Wabash Valley.

Orange Friday — the last Friday before Thanksgiving — has been designated as a hunger awareness event in which people purchase an orange ribbon for a $3 donation in support of the Catholic Charities. Its food bank receives 100 percent of the proceeds from the ribbon sales.

The goal is to raise $5,000, which is enough to provide 20,000 meals for hungry families.

Ribbons are being sold from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Baesler’s Market. Other Orange Friday volunteers are also selling the ribbons at various locations.

Orange Friday was started five years ago as a charitable effort before the annual Black Friday shopping frenzy that has traditionally kicked off the Christmas season.

Since its start, Orange Friday has raised more than $15,000 for hungry people served by Catholic Charities.
