Vigo restaurant inspections moving to iPad-based app

TERRE HAUTE — Food inspectors at the Vigo County Health Department will soon be employing a mobile app that officials said is easier to use, efficient and more streamline in inspections.

During Wednesday’s Vigo County Board of Health meeting, its first meeting of the year, Environmental Health Supervisor Travella Myers announced that the Environmental Health Division will be getting a new food inspection software program, which will be a mobile app loaded into an iPad. The software is created by Inspect2GO, which offers software products to environmental health agencies. The app will be loaded onto six iPads that the division will also be getting, Myers said.

A computer virus corrupted most of the files in the Vigo County Health Department on mid-December 2013. It also corrupted the Food Smart Program, the software that the Environmental Health Division used for food inspections. But even before the virus hit, Myers said, the division had already been looking at this program to replace the Food Smart Program, which was “antiquated … approximately 13 years old,” Myers said. The virus just “pushed us forward” into getting the new software.

“Inspect2GO will be customizing the program with the needs of our division. … The iPad app includes walk-through inspection checklists with photo and note-taking capabilities. … Upon completion of the inspection, meeting at the Vigo County Annex.

Inspect2GO will also allow for other tasks not previously available using the previous program such as the capability for the inspector to sign the report electronically

/onscreen signature and ability to view past inspection reports per establishment, offline.

The division may start using Inspect2GO within the next two months, Myers said.

The Environmental Health Division inspects about 500 food establishments in the county, Myers said, and it conducts about 1,200 inspections a year.
