‘Deplorable conditions’ found at Vigo home from which animals seized

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an alleged case of animal neglect involving several dogs and cats discovered in a home in western Vigo County.

Sheriff’s deputies were at the scene responding to a call concerning animals in “deplorable conditions” at a home on North Howe Place, which is in Sugar Creek Township less than a mile from the Illinois state line, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

Deputies noticed a foul odor coming from the home and, once inside, discovered seven dogs and four cats in conditions described as “pretty disgusting” by Sheriff Greg Ewing.

The dogs were caged without food or water, he said. A dead and decaying dog was also found in one cage inside the home, Ewing said.

A deceased cat was also in the home, according to the news release.

The Vigo County Building Inspector and the Vigo County Health Department were called to the scene.

The Health Department tagged the home, which police stated is owned by Mary Ann Moore, as unfit for human habitation, according to police.

An investigation is continuing, and charges of animal neglect may be filed as the case evolves, Ewing said.

The Terre Haute Humane Society removed the animals from the home, the news release states.
