Officials make sweep of commercial vehicles

TERRE HAUTE — Several law enforcement agencies recently conducted a commercial vehicle inspection at the Indiana State Police Scale Facility on Interstate 70 near the Indiana-Illinois state line. The project began at 6 a.m. last Monday and continued through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Indiana State Police motor carrier inspectors from the Putnamville District, along with safety investigators from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration were targeting unsafe motor carriers, drivers and vehicles hauling hazardous materials.

The results are:

• Traffic citations issued — 18

• Traffic warnings issued — 22

• Truck citations issued — 18

• Hazardous material violations — 28

• Motor vehicle inspections conducted — 64

• Total enforcement contacts (tickets, warnings, inspections) — 104

Five drivers were placed “out of service”: one had a false log book; two had hours of service violations; and the other two did not have the proper commercial driver’s license for the vehicle each was operating.

Fifteen vehicles were placed out of service for having unsafe equipment, and 10 vehicles were determined to be overweight. The drivers were cited.

In addition, one carrier was stopped and cited for operating in violation of an FMCSA operational out of service order.

Other drivers were cited or warned for miscellaneous registration and equipment violations. The hazardous material violations consisted of driver, equipment and placard violations with no danger to the general public.
