Park Board renames land around Memorial Stadium

TERRE HAUTE — Land surrounding Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium on Terre Haute’s east side has been designated as Veterans Memorial Park, following a unanimous vote Wednesday from the Terre Haute Park Board.

The area had previously been unnamed and was referred to as Memorial Stadium Grounds, said Eddie Bird, superintendent of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department.

Michael Wright, county attorney for the Vigo County board of commissioners, told the city park board the property is owned by Vigo County and leased to the city, which subleases to Indiana State University. County commissioners had approved of the name change last year.

The name change will not impact ISU’s Memorial Stadium, or a mile long walking trail around that stadium, formerly known as the Indiana Mile and renamed the Indiana Veterans Memorial Mile by the Terre Haute City Council.

Cliff Stephens of the Vigo County Veterans Council sought the name change to honor veterans from both the city and county. Stephens said the veterans’ group plans to sell up to 100,000 bricks at $50 per brick to line the walking trail. Each brick would have up to three lines for the name and military service of a U.S. veteran.

Small plaques about military history may also be established around the trail along with some new benches, Stephens told the park board.

Funds raised would return to the city parks system for use at the newly named memorial park. Stephens said a dedication of the new park is slated for 2 p.m. Monday, as part of a Memorial Day observance.

Vigo County approved use of the land to the City of Terre Haute in December 1920 for use as a public park, athletic field, exhibition ground, playground and general meeting place.

ISU leases the property from the city under a 99 year agreement dated Oct. 8, 1966. ISU pays $10 a year in rent to the city. The university has an option to terminate the agreement at any point after Oct. 1, 2016.
