TERRE HAUTE — The awards ceremony for the 2013 TREES Inc. Photography Contest — themed “Trees and the River” — was held Wednesday night at the Vigo County Public Library in downtown Terre Haute.

Nine photographers were recognized at the ceremony attended by more than 30 people.

“Our mission … includes educating people of the beauty and the value and the need to protect our trees,” said TREES Inc. president Barbara Brugnaux during the opening remarks.

“And if a photograph or picture is worth a thousand words, then a photography contest is a perfect way to promote our mission: introduce people to the beauty and the value of our trees,” she said.

Three awards (first place, second place and third place) were given to photographers in different categories: Professional, Adult Amateur and Youth. Two individuals were also given honorable mentions.

One young photographer, Emily Padgett, won both first and second place in the Youth division. One of her entries also received an honorable mention.

“You might as well stay up here,” one of the presenters said when Emily got up — for the third time — to receive the first-place award.

Her first-place winning entry, “The Woodland Arch,” received praise from the judges for its perspective, which they called “fascinating.”

In celebration of the 2013 Year of the River, the photo entries were required to include one or multiple trees, or part of a tree, and include part of a river. About 120 entries for the contest, now in its eighth year, were received.

“It’s fun, educational, cultural. It’s a communitywide initiative to bring awareness to a wonderful asset: the river,” contest chair Elizabeth Scamihorn said.

The contest is sponsored by TREES Inc., the Tribune-Star and the Vigo County Public Library.

The award-winning photos will remain on display in the library through Oct. 31.
