Judge finds reason for charging two in meth case

TERRE HAUTE — Two West Terre Haute men face methamphetamine charges following their arrest on Wednesday by Indiana State Police.

Donald Smith Jr., 45, and Kenneth Marles, 51, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Thursday where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for their arrest.

ISP Trooper Shiloh Ralston said that police knocked on the door of Smith’s residence on Wednesday morning to investigate a tip about meth being manufactured there. Smith consented to a search of the property, and police found a defunct meth lab in an outbuilding.

Marles also allowed police to search his bedroom, where they found a syringe that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Smith faces a preliminary charge of manufacturing methamphetamine, a class-B felony. He was being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $75,000 cash only.

Marles was also lodged in the jail on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, a class-D felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a class-B misdemeanor. He is being held on $10,000 cash bail.

Smith and Marles were the only two people arrested in that investigation by ISP. An ISP new release issued late Wednesday erroneously linked a third person to the investigation.
