Indiana Principal Leadership Institute begins July 17

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University’s Bayh College of Education announced that applications are available for the inaugural Indiana Principal Leadership Institute, with classes beginning July 17.

The institute, created by the Indiana General Assembly in 2013, is a two-year experience designed to address the professional needs of Indiana public school principals, emphasizing student success.

The institute will increase a principal’s capacity to address the current needs of a school, such as teacher evaluation models, student performance, community involvement and shaping a strong school culture.

Fifty principals are invited to participate in the first class. Their responsibilities include attending five seminars each year. Participants also will be guided by mentors who are established and respected educators in their communities.

By working in small groups, the principals will focus on developing and implementing personal and school improvement plans, facilitating action research projects, refining school improvement plans and building a support network during and beyond the institute experience.

“The ultimate goal of the institute is to improve schools,” said Steve Gruenert, chairman of educational leadership in the Bayh College of Education. “Using an approach that is collaborative, research-based and results-oriented, we have a tremendous opportunity to take the skills of our Hoosier educators to the next level, which will have a significant impact on children of our state. With the institute, we intend to structure the best professional development program for principals in the nation.”

Principals interested in applying for the first class should apply online at www.indianapli.org. A one-time financial contribution of $1,000 from the school corporation is required for participation. Nominating a principal implies the superintendent and school board think the principal has the potential to improve the school, is supportive of positive change in the school and will allow data collection to occur.

The Indiana Principal Leadership Academy at Indiana State University was created by bipartisan legislation authored by Sens. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) and Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn), and supported by Sens. Tim Skinner (D-Terre Haute), Earline Rogers (D-Gary) and Lindel Hume (D- Princeton) and Reps. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and Alan Morrison (R-Terre Haute). Gov. Mike Pence approved the legislation last month.
