Single-day event set for Dec. 6

TERRE HAUTE — Officials from the Miracle on 7th Street organization have set the date — Dec. 6 — for their annual single-day holiday event. Miracle on 7th Street will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. at the intersection of Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue, according to a press release.

Returning for the 2013 event are an open air marketplace, tree decorating contest, gingerbread house and holiday window decorating contests, wreath and poinsettia sales, holiday music, and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Organizers are considering a new element to the Miracle event — an outdoor temporary ice rink. The ice rink would be available for downtown visitors to use, and it could also be available for private parties.

If the ice rink comes to fruition, event officials see opportunities to use the ice rink to raise more food donations and dollars for the charities benefiting from the Miracle’s one-day event. The estimated cost of the temporary ice rink is $20,000. This would include set up, tear down and provisions for ice skates.

Charities benefiting from the Miracle’s food donation include: Catholic Charities, 14th & Chestnut’s Grumbling Tummies program and St. Benedict’s Soup Kitchen. The charities that provide uniform food baskets for area families will receive equal monetary contributions. These charities are: Salvation Army’s Christmas Food Basket program and the Tribune-Star’s Christmas Basket Fund. More than 20 nonprofit organizations that will be represented at the event raise funds for their individual programs, according to the release.

Miracle on 7th Street was created to bring families across the Wabash Valley to downtown Terre Haute for a one-day shopping and charitable giving event. “In addition,” organizers said in the press release, “downtown proprietors of our locally owned and operated shops, galleries, studios, restaurants and theaters invite everyone to mark their 2013 holiday calendars for a downtown experience in the heart of Terre Haute and Vigo County. This year marks the Miracle’s fifth year of putting on this nostalgic feel-of-Christmas celebration and charitable giving event.”
