Vigo schools cancel outside groups’ use of buildings for now

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County School Corp. canceled use of corporation school facilities Monday in an effort to tighten security in the wake of the mass shooting Friday in Newtown, Conn.

“After-school events are still going on but outside groups who use the schools are canceled,” said school corporation director of student services Ray Azar in an email Monday evening to the Tribune-Star. “Our goal is to have tighter security related to the facilities and the restricted use of facilities helps to improve site security,” he stated.

It was not clear for how long the policy will remain in place. Christmas break begins for Vigo schools after classes conclude on Wednesday of this week.

Groups such as the Terre Haute Torpedoes swim club and other groups that typically use school property were contacting members Monday afternoon to inform them of the cancellations.

Vigo County School Superintendent Dan Tanoos could not be reached Monday evening or late Monday for comment.
