HARMONY — Two people died after being ejected from a car that crashed early Saturday south of Harmony in eastern Clay County.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that Darrell R. Moore, 18, and Alexis J. Holbert-Darkis, 20, both of Brazil, were pronounced dead by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.

Kelsey D. Reid, 19, of Carbon, was the driver of the car. She was transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil for treatment following the crash.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, a 911 call reported the accident just after 6 a.m. When deputies arrived at the scene in the 9000 block of North County Road 300 East, they found a nearby property owner assisting Reid. The two passengers were located in a small ditch. Moore and Holbert-Darkis had been ejected from the car.

Reid tested negative for drugs and alcohol, police reported.

The investigation indicates that the driver was southbound when she failed to negotiate a curve and continued straight off the road, sideswiping a tree and then striking another tree on the passenger side. The car then flipped and landed on its roof.

The driver reportedly told deputies that she was driving “a little too fast” and went off the road and began hitting trees.

Autopsies for the passengers are set for Monday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
