Komen, ISU take fans to ‘Pink Out’

Clubs compete to bring most people to game wearing pink

TERRE HAUTE — A ribbon of pink laced through a crowd of blue as fans battled cancer while watching the Sycamore women score another win.

Indiana State University teamed up with the Wabash Valley affiliate of the Susan G. Komen organization Sunday afternoon, sponsoring a “Pink Out” game. Pink attire or ribbons were encouraged of visitors coming to watch the ISU women’s team defeat Drake University, 59-48.

Sally Roetker, board president of the local Susan G. Komen affiliate, said organizations and campus clubs were invited to compete in the effort to see which could bring the most people to the game wearing pink.

“ISU’s been a phenomenal supporter of our cause,” she said shortly before halftime, explaining that Sunday represented the sixth such event.

A trophy was presented to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at halftime in honor of both their numbers at the game as well as past contributions to the cause.

An 11-year survivor of breast cancer, Roetker said events such as this give the organization a chance to raise awareness, as well as money through the sale of clothing and other merchandise.

Vickie Norton said she’s been selling merchandise on behalf of the charity for 16 years, and Sunday marked a great day for fundraising.

“Everyone wants their pink out,” she said near a table full of shirts, ribbons and hats.

Matthew Janeway, co-chair of this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, said the games also give the group a chance to promote this year’s Sept. 7 event. As an intern working with the group, he said the cause is very meaningful.

“It’s just a wonderful organization that helps women who would otherwise not be able to afford health care,” he said.

Hanna Brant likewise serves as a student intern with the group, working at its retail outlet inside Meadows Shopping Center.

“Susan G. Komen is a great organization that offers education about women’s health issues,” the 20-year-old political science major said.

The local affiliate’s next “Pink Out” game will be Tuesday at the Linton High School boys basketball game, then March 9 at Ag Day at the Sullivan County Fairgrounds from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ISU usher Jane Jones sported pink decor around her blue and white Sycamores shirt Sunday, as well as a pink ribbon on her cheek.

“My daughter-in-law was just recently diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said, adding that the local affiliate has been very helpful. “I think the support group is wonderful from what I’ve heard from my daughter-in-law. Very supportive.”
