Three men arrested after I-70 traffic stop

Car contained counterfeit government documents

PUTNAMVILLE — What started as an attempted traffic stop for speeding resulted in the arrest of three men on drug and counterfeit government document charges.

According to a news release, at 1:30 a.m. Friday, Indiana State Police trooper Jonathan Cumbie clocked a vehicle at 83 miles-per-hour in the passing lane of eastbound Interstate 70 near the 30 mile marker. The vehicle was a rented 2012 Chevrolet Cruze and the speed limit for that area was 70 mph.

As Cumbie activated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle, a red can was thrown onto the roadway from the passenger side of the Chevrolet Cruze, the release stated. The vehicle then stopped and three male passengers were located inside. Further investigation found a small amount of suspected marijuana (less than 30 grams) inside the red can and the front seat and rear seat passengers appeared to have fraudulent Mexico government documents, the release stated. The three were taken into custody and incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail.

Arrested were:

• Ismail Ibrahim Ismail Khan, age 30, of Saudi Arabia,  on a charge of possession of marijuana (under 30 grams), class-A misdemeanor. His bond is set at $8,000.

• Ricardo Zarate Aguirre, age 25, of Chinicuila, Mexico, on charges of possession of marijuana (under 30 grams), class-A misdemeanor and possession of counterfeit government documents, class-D felony. No bond was set for Aguirre.

• Diego Hernandez Mendoza, age 29, of Gustavo, Mexico, on charges of possession of marijuana (under 30 grams), class-A misdemeanor and possession of counterfeit government documents, class-D felony. No bond was set for Mendoza.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the traffic stop.
